MIGRANT BEGGARS CRACKDOWN WILL BE A NATIONWIDE EXERCISE – Interior Minister Assures

Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has indicated that the government’s action against organised street begging in Accra signifies the beginning of a broader, national effort to tackle the problem.

In a formal announcement shared on his Facebook page, the Minister revealed that a recent action by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) led to the capture of 2,241 foreign individuals participating in coordinated street begging in the Greater Accra Region.

The operation was an unexpected intervention that astonished even the crowd as drivers and onlookers paused, observing the seamless gathering of those vagrants from their usual areas of resting, soliciting, or leisure.

The Minister stated that the operation was a component of a continuous effort to restore public order and protect national security.

“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” Muntaka stated. “I have seen the public reactions and calls for similar actions in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities,” he wrote.

“Please be assured that this is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon.”

The Minister also requested public collaboration as the initiative grows beyond the capital, encouraging communities to aid in maintaining safe and orderly streets.

“I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities,” he said, encouraging all Ghanaians to join hands with authorities,” he added.
