IGP INTENSIFIES FIGHT AGAINST GALAMSEY…13 ARRESTED, OVER 120 CHANGFANG MACHINES DESTROYED IN WASSA GYAPA GALAMSEY RAID

The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested 13 individuals involved in illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey during a major operation at Wassa Gyapa in the Western Region.

On May 19, 2025, the police conducted a raid that resulted in the destruction of over 120 changfang machines used for unauthorized mining. In addition, six motorbikes were confiscated from the site.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.

The accused are scheduled to appear before the Tarkwa Circuit Court on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The police reiterated their commitment to tackling illegal mining, which remains a serious threat to Ghana’s environment, particularly its water bodies.
