TRADERS WHO FLOUT DECONGESTION DIRECTIVE WILL BE FINED ₵2000 – Accra Regional Minister

Linda Ocloo, the Regional Minister for Greater Accra, has announced that vendors who violate the decongestion order will incur a penalty of ₵2000.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) initiated its significant decongestion effort on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The AMA task forces, along with the Ghana Police Service, conducted operations to take down makeshift stalls and unauthorised kiosks, as well as clear vendors from sidewalks and roadways throughout major areas of the Central Business District.

As stated by the AMA, the initial stage of the exercise centres on the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to the Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square extending to Adabraka.

They disclosed that the operation, set to continue for 2 weeks, aims to enforce city regulations, reduce congestion, and guarantee the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles.

After the decongestion activity, vehicles were observed moving unhindered as vendors were removed from the roads and sidewalks.

Linda Ocloo, touring the CBD during the operation, stated, “We are going to activate our task force to work 24 hours. They are going to draw a red line on the road, so when you cross the line, you have a fee to pay, which is 1500gh, maximum 2000gh.

We are going to make sure that we have leaders in all the markets who will be monitoring, aside from the task force, and make sure that the right things are being done.”
