EOCO ARRESTS NPP ASHANTI REGIONAL CHAIRMAN WONTUMI
Political figure detained amid ongoing investigations into illegal mining activities
Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as “Wontumi,” the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his recent visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
Wontumi had voluntarily appeared at the CID for further questioning in connection with allegations related to illegal mining, mining within forest reserves, and unauthorized entry into protected forest areas. He was instructed to return as part of his bail conditions, a directive he complied with.
However, upon leaving the CID on Tuesday, May 27, EOCO operatives intercepted and arrested him. The precise grounds for this arrest have not been disclosed publicly, and EOCO is yet to release an official statement clarifying the situation.
