WE WON’T LEAVE UNTIL WONTUMI IS RELEASED – Minority MPs

Tensions rose at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters on Thursday as Minority Members of Parliament held a sit-in protest, calling for the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi.

Dressed in their official parliamentary clothing, the MPs positioned themselves on the ground at EOCO’s main entrance, unwilling to leave until their demands were addressed.

They claim that Wontumi’s ongoing detention, even after receiving bail, is driven by political motives and constitutes persecution.

“This is pure intimidation. He has done nothing wrong. We won’t leave until he walks free,” one MP told the press.

The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region was detained during EOCO’s investigation into purported illegal mining operations and financial improprieties. Although bail was approved, the MPs claim that the hold-ups in the procedure are intentional.

The situation at EOCO intensifies the escalating political tension, as the MPs claim that authorities are employing state institutions to go after political rivals.
