SHA’CARRI RICHARDSON ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED ASSAULT ON BOYFRIEND AT SEATTLE AIRPORT
Olympic gold medalist and reigning 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested on July 27, 2025, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following an alleged assault on her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.
According to a police report obtained by the Associated Press, the incident took place at a security checkpoint when a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor alerted authorities to a disturbance. Surveillance footage reviewed by police reportedly showed Richardson pulling Coleman’s backpack, blocking his path as he attempted to walk away, and shoving him into a wall. She was also seen throwing an object, believed to be a pair of headphones, at him.
Richardson, 25, was charged with fourth-degree domestic violence and was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) jail in Des Moines, Washington. She was released the following day. Police stated that Coleman declined to cooperate with the investigation and chose not to press charges.
USA Track and Field (USATF) acknowledged the incident but declined further comment, while Richardson’s agent did not respond to media inquiries.
Despite the arrest and ensuing scrutiny, Richardson competed on August 3 at the US Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. While she holds an automatic entry to the World Championships in the 100m as the defending champion, her attempt to qualify for the 200m event ended narrowly. She finished fourth in her heat with a time of 22.56 seconds, missing the final by just 0.01 seconds behind Madison Whyte.
Richardson, who won 100m gold at the 2023 World Championships and silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will now proceed to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo under controversy and without the opportunity to contest the 200m.
The athlete previously missed the Tokyo 2021 Olympics after testing positive for marijuana but made a strong comeback by winning gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 100m at the Paris Games.
