The Government of Ghana has announced that a state funeral will be held for the late former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, on Friday, November 28, 2025.
The ceremony will take place at the Independence Square in Accra under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of her “invaluable contributions to the advancement of the rights of women and children in Ghana, and national development.”
The announcement was made on Thursday, November 6, 2025, by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP. In a statement, he said the state funeral would celebrate Mrs. Rawlings’ “lifelong dedication to public service.”
Nana Konadu, who was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on October 23, 2025, at the age of 76 after a short illness.
A towering figure in Ghana’s political and social landscape, she was the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and broke barriers as the first Ghanaian First Lady to contest the Presidency. She is survived by her four children: Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Amina, Yaa Asantewaa, and Kimathi Rawlings.
The state funeral is expected to draw dignitaries from across the country and beyond, offering a national moment to pay tribute to her enduring legacy.
