“END WEEDING AS PUNISHMENT” – CHIEF OF STAFF JULIUS DEBRAH APPEALS TO SCHOOLS

Warns practice makes students view farming negatively; suggests fetching water or sweeping as alternative disciplinary measures.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has made a passionate appeal to educational authorities to stop using weeding and farming activities as punishment for students, warning that it creates negative perceptions about agriculture among the youth.

Speaking at the launch of the School Farm Initiative at St. Aquinas Senior High School on Friday, Mr. Debrah revealed that the concern was first raised by his driver during their journey to the event, prompting his urgent call for reform.

“Because if a child does something wrong, and the only option of punishing them is to ask them to weed, they grow thinking that weeding or farming is a bad thing,” the Chief of Staff explained to students and staff.

Mr. Debrah urged schools to adopt alternative disciplinary measures such as fetching water or sweeping instead, emphasizing that this shift is crucial to changing perceptions about agriculture among young people.

The appeal came during the launch of the School Farm Initiative, a government program designed to transform schools into centers of agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship. The initiative aims to present farming as an attractive and rewarding career path rather than an undesirable activity.

The Chief of Staff stressed that changing this long-standing practice is essential to repositioning agriculture as a productive and valuable sector that can contribute significantly to national development.
