TWO REMANDED OVER HOMOWO SHOOTING AT OMANJOR
The Adabraka District Court has charged two individuals who were detained in relation to a violent altercation that occurred at the Homowo Festival at Omanjor in Accra.
The defendants, Newton Allotey, 26, a dispatch rider, and Christian Saka Ahianyevi, 35, a security officer, are accused of murder, rioting with weapons, and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to reports, they acted alongside roughly thirty other people who are presently at large.
Because of the nature of the charges, the court, which was presided over by Mrs. Abena Owusu Omenyo, did not accept their pleas and instead remanded them into lawful detention with the intention of seeing them again on September 29, 2025.
Prosecuting Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana clarified that the pleas were postponed due to the involvement in murder and the ongoing investigations. He stated that attempts were being made to capture the remaining suspects.
According to the prosecution’s account of events, the incident happened on August 30, 2025, during the chiefs’ and communities’ annual Homowo Festival in Omanjor and the surrounding areas
A procession and the customary sprinkling of Kpokpoi on the streets were part of the festivities. Claiming the Omanjor chief and his people had trespassed on their property, the accused and their associates allegedly stopped the procession close to the “Police land” area.
According to reports, Abubakar Ramadan Sarbahaka Nii Kwashiebu, Joseph Shaibu Dodoo, and Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan were killed when a miscommunication turned into a shooting.
Nathaniel Doku, Samuel Adjei, and Frederick Lartey (also known as Nii Obrafour) were among the others who were hurt. While some of the injured have been treated and released from the Ridge and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals, others are still undergoing treatment.
The prosecution further informed the court that the accused was arrested the next day as a result of intelligence. A machete and a locally made handgun were discovered in Christian’s possession, while eighteen empty cartridges were taken from Newton’s room.
There are still investigations going on.
