NPP PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY: DR BRYAN ACHEAMPONG WINS VOLTA REGION WITH 5,234 VOTES

Former Agric Minister beats Bawumia and Agyapong in surprise regional victory

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has pulled off a major surprise by winning the Volta Region in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

According to certified regional results, Dr Acheampong secured 5,234 votes, outperforming former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,098 votes to place second.

Businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong came third with 1,982 votes, while former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong obtained 125 and 48 votes, respectively.

The Volta Region recorded a total of 11,524 votes cast, of which 11,477 were declared valid and 47 rejected.

Dr Acheampong’s performance represents approximately 45.6% of the total valid votes cast, his best regional showing in the nationwide contest. Dr Bawumia followed with 35.7%, while Kennedy Agyapong secured 17.3%.

Political analysts say the victory gives Dr Acheampong a significant morale boost and highlights his growing influence within the party’s internal structures, particularly in regions where the NPP traditionally struggles to gain traction.

Despite Acheampong’s strong showing in the Volta Region, Dr Bawumia continues to hold a commanding lead in the overall national tally, according to provisional results from other regions.

Collation is still ongoing from more than 300 polling centres across the country, where over 211,000 delegates participated in Saturday’s keenly contested internal election to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
