Ghanaian actor, Adjetey Anang, popularly known as Pusher has emphasized the importance of storytelling in tackling social issues such as illegal mining, also known as galamsey in Ghana.
In response to a query about the importance of individuals in the creative industry joining the fight against illegal mining, the actor from ‘Things We Do for Love’ mentioned that they have significant influence that can be utilized through their work instead of participating in demonstrations.
Nevertheless, he expressed his approval for protests against important issues such as galamsey as long as they adhere to the rules.
“We’ve learnt to do that so well in the stories that we tell and so every now and then if you watch our productions we have adaptations of them, we change certain lines, we inject some of these things for the audience to know that we can have the entertainment and fun but there are serious issues going on there and have to pay attention so we are able to craft that well in our stories that we tell and that’s the best and I think that that’s where we should be heard loudly that hitting the streets,” he said.
Democracy Hub conducted a three-day protest on September 17 to urge the government to end galamsey in order to prevent its harmful effects on water sources and forests.
However, around 40 protesters were placed in police and prison custody for reportedly committing different offenses during the protest.
This has stirred up unrest among the populace, leading some to demand that the police release the protesters.
Celebrities such as Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy have also been criticized for staying silent about the tragic incident.
Adjetey Anang’s statement reinforces the idea that creatives have the ability to impact society in diverse ways through their different creations.
