AFENYO-MARKIN DEMANDS BAN ON TERM ‘MICRO-MINORITY’ IN PARLIAMENT

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Leader of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, has called for an immediate halt to using the term “micro-minority caucus” about the NPP members in Parliament.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Afenyo-Markin strongly objected to the phrase, stating that it is not recognised in the House’s rules and should not be recorded in official proceedings.

“From today, nobody should ever use that term in this House. Nobody should use that term in this House,” he firmly stated on the floor, expressing concerns that the use of such terminology undermines the caucus’s status as the “official minority.”

His comments followed remarks by Speaker Alban Bagbin, who acknowledged the objection and admitted that his use of the term was influenced by the Minority Leader’s prior usage. The Speaker agreed that the term should not be formally recognised in parliamentary records or used by him.

Afenyo-Markin further argued that the Speaker’s use of the term created an impression of bias towards the Majority and emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness in parliamentary discourse.

This declaration underscores the Minority Caucus’s efforts to protect its identity and ensure neutrality in Parliament’s language and proceedings.
