AFENYO-MARKIN PROMPTS PRESIDENCY OVER BOG GOVERNOR NOMINEE’S ASSUMPTION OF DUTY WITHOUT VETTING AND APPROVAL

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has addressed a letter to President John Mahama concerning the appointment of the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiamah, prior to the Council of State’s approval of his nomination.

It is reported that the new Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiamah held a brief engagement with the management of the Central Bank on Monday, February 3.

The minority leader mentioned a news report regarding Mr. Asiamah’s actions at the bank and urged the Presidency to take appropriate measures to address the issue to avoid establishing a negative precedent.

There are also inquiries about the possible consequences if the Council of State, when formed, chooses not to endorse Dr Asiamah’s nomination.

“If, for instance, a judicial nominee were to take their seat in court and begin administering justice before receiving the necessary approvals from the Judicial Council, it would be widely deemed inappropriate,” the letter noted, emphasizing that the same principle should apply to the nomination of Dr Asiamah.

The letter also urged Dr. Asiamah to avoid undertaking official responsibilities at the Bank of Ghana until his nomination receives formal approval.

What measures will be taken to address the actions he has already undertaken in his assumed capacity?” the letter queried, urging a thorough review of the situation.

While waiting for confirmation, the letter indicated that he might pursue essential briefings beyond the formal assumption of office.

While awaiting confirmation, he can seek any necessary briefings outside the formal assumption of office,” the letter read.
