Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has called on the government to increase funding for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to enable the state-owned broadcaster to effectively fulfill its mandate. The Effutu MP raised the issue on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 21, urging Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, to appear before the House and outline the government’s plans to support GBC.
“Mr. Speaker, if it’s about resources, I would again want the Leader of Government Business to program the Minister of Communication and Digitalization to come to this House to brief us on steps that the ministry is taking to resource GBC,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He emphasized the critical role GBC, particularly GTV, plays in delivering quality and educational programming to all parts of the country, including remote areas. Afenyo-Markin warned that without adequate financial and logistical support, the broadcaster risks collapsing.
“They have very nice programmes, especially their Breakfast Show, which is very educative. If GBC does not get the support, they are likely to collapse. We don’t want that to happen,” he cautioned.
The Minority Leader’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the perceived marginalization of GBC in favor of other media outlets, including the pro-NDC Woezor TV. Critics have pointed out that GTV’s exclusive rights to cover events at the Presidency, once a staple of its operations, are being gradually eroded.
