“AIM FOR WORLD CUP FINAL” – Sports Minister Charges Black Stars
Kofi Adams sets ambitious target after Mali victory; says Ghana must surpass 2010 quarterfinal achievement if they qualify for 2026 tournament.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams has set an ambitious target for the Black Stars, charging them to aim for the 2026 World Cup final should they secure qualification for the global tournament.
The Minister’s bold declaration comes after Ghana strengthened their qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, following a frustrating 1-1 draw against Chad last week.
The results extend Ghana’s lead in Group I to 19 points, with Otto Addo’s side needing just one more victory to secure their fifth World Cup appearance.
Speaking to Woezor TV, the Buem Constituency MP stated: “The Black Stars must aim at playing in the final of the 2026 World Cup if the team qualify. We must aim to better the performance we achieved in South Africa.”
Adams referenced Ghana’s historic quarterfinal finish in the 2010 World Cup as the benchmark to surpass, expressing confidence in both the current squad and the political environment supporting them.
“The President [John Mahama] has brought some goodwill to the country, and I strongly believe that we have the best players to make that history,” the Sports Minister added.
The Black Stars will conclude their qualifying campaign in October with an away match against Central African Republic before hosting Comoros in what could be their qualification-sealing match.
