President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has honoured his commitment to implement visa-free entry for individuals from all African countries to Ghana.
The commitment, announced at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January, sought to improve the unrestricted movement of individuals, commodities, and services throughout the continent.
Following executive approval received on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, this policy is scheduled to be implemented prior to the conclusion of Akufo-Addo’s term on January 6, 2025.
This policy represents a major advancement in achieving the African Union’s goal of economic integration via the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Ghana will be alongside Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin, which are the only nations in Africa that provide visa-free access to all holders of African passports.
The action is anticipated to strengthen initiatives aimed at forming the planet’s largest unified market, involving 55 countries, and improve cooperation among African governments and enterprises.
In his APD 2024 keynote address, delivered under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the visa-free initiative.
“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he said, referencing a special arrangement that reduced visa fees for participants.
“The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free travel for all Africans, and the process has begun to implement the policy this year,” he assured attendees.
The Ghana Immigration Service is likely to reveal the official commencement date, which is expected to be Wednesday, 1 January 2025.
