A statue of President Nana Akufo-Addo, located in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, has been found damaged, sparking concerns among residents.
On the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024, a large hole was discovered at the back of one of the statue’s legs. The cause of the damage remains unclear, leaving room for speculation about whether it was deliberate vandalism or the result of structural flaws.
The development comes after some residents of Takoradi previously vowed to pull down the statue, expressing dissatisfaction with its presence. While no group has claimed responsibility, the current state of the monument raises questions about its integrity and durability.
“I am very surprised. This was done so the president could be remembered. I am surprised one of its legs is broken, but I haven’t seen anyone say they would destroy it,” Doris Arhin, a resident, told reporters.
Another resident, Esther Anosi, suggested the damage might be due to hasty construction work. “I think the statue was done in a rush, which caused the defects. It was supposed to take two months, but it was done in two weeks. I believe the authorities had a good reason for erecting it.”
The statue was unveiled by President Akufo-Addo during a tour of the Western Region, just ahead of the 2024 general elections. According to the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, the monument was erected to commemorate key projects under the Akufo-Addo administration. These include the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the Sinohydro 3-tier interchange, and the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment.
Authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the damage or outline plans for repairs, but the incident has reignited debates about the statue’s necessity and quality.
