ALAN KYEREMATEN CRITICIZES FORMER PRESIDENT KUFUOR OVER BAWUMIA ENDORSEMENT

The flagbearer of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has openly criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor for endorsing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate for the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with selected journalists on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor urged Ghanaians to rally behind Dr. Bawumia, citing his economic acumen and suitability to lead the nation during challenging global times. The former president referenced Bawumia’s contributions during his tenure, particularly in stabilizing Ghana’s economy as part of the Bank of Ghana’s team.

“Considering the present global context, I genuinely believe that Ghana’s economy would witness substantial growth if Bawumia were elected as President,” Kufuor stated. “With divine guidance, he is more than capable of fulfilling this promise, and I urge you to back his candidacy.”

Kufuor’s public endorsement, however, has not sat well with Alan Kyerematen, who broke away from the NPP earlier this year to form the Movement for Change. Speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, November 18, Kyerematen accused the former president of compromising the neutrality expected of a statesman.

“Kufuor is my uncle, and I hesitate to publicly criticize him,” Kyerematen began. “But his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia is a grave misstep that could overshadow his political legacy. His actions have sparked widespread public disapproval, and I find it concerning.”

Kyerematen also expressed fears that Kufuor’s involvement in active partisan politics at this stage could tarnish the respect and reverence he commands nationwide.

“He is a revered figure in Ghanaian politics, so why choose to wade into partisan politics now?” Kyerematen questioned. “It’s a regrettable decision, and he is venturing into dangerous territory.”

Despite his familial ties to the former president, Kyerematen did not hold back, suggesting that Kufuor’s endorsement has already provoked backlash among Ghanaians. He maintained that the former president is well aware of the implications of his actions and urged him to reconsider his stance.

Alan Kyerematen, who is positioning his Movement for Change as a third force in Ghana’s political landscape, remains resolute in presenting himself as a credible alternative to the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). With less than a year to the elections, his criticism of Kufuor signals his intent to challenge both his former party and its leadership head-on.
