Nelle Diala, a flight attendant with Alaska Airlines, has been dismissed from her position after a twerking video she posted on social media went viral. The video, captioned “ghetto bih till I D-I-E, don’t let the uniform fool you,” was filmed in an empty aircraft during a layover and quickly gained traction on TikTok and Instagram.
Diala, who had been with the airline for just over six months, was fired for allegedly violating Alaska Airlines’ social media policy. Following her dismissal, she took to social media to express her frustration, reposting the video with the caption: “Can’t even be yourself anymore, without the world being so sensitive. What’s wrong with a little twerk before work? People act like they never did that before,” along with the hashtag #discriminationisreal.
To gain financial support after losing her “dream job,” Diala launched a GoFundMe page. On the page, she explained the circumstances behind the video, stating that it was a “lighthearted clip” recorded at 6 a.m. during a two-hour wait for pilots. She also noted that it was a celebration of the end of her probation period.
“The video went viral overnight, but instead of love and support, it brought unexpected scrutiny,” Diala wrote. “Although it was a poor decision on my behalf, I didn’t think it would cost me my dream job.”
Diala claims that her termination was abrupt and unfair. She said, “My employer accused me of violating their social media policy. I explained that the video wasn’t intended to harm anyone or the company, but they didn’t want to listen. Without warning, they terminated me—no discussion, no chance to defend myself, and no thorough investigation.”
The incident has left Diala devastated, as she reflected on the loss of her career. “Losing my job was devastating. I’ve always been careful about what I share online, and I never thought this video, which didn’t even mention the airline by name, would cost me my career. Now, I am trying to figure out how to move forward,” she shared.
This story has sparked mixed reactions online, with some people criticizing the airline for its decision and others emphasizing the importance of adhering to workplace policies. For Diala, the fallout from a seemingly harmless moment has turned into a life-altering event, raising questions about the balance between personal expression and professional expectations.
