The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for purportedly mishandling parliamentary matters by declining to reconvene Parliament for an urgent session.
Afenyo-Markin criticized the Speaker for behaving as if Parliament belonged to him personally, and for making decisions about its operations without consulting others.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, he voiced his frustration with the Speaker’s lack of cooperation, especially regarding pressing government matters.
“Look at the shutdown happening in Parliament. The Speaker has taken Parliament as his personal property; when it pleases him, he opens Parliament. Even when there is an issue that he could sit with us on, he says no,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He went on to condemn Bagbin for his management of a recent parliamentary deadlock, claiming that he obstructed government operations even after court decisions had settled the issue.
“We as law-abiding citizens took the matter to court.
“The court ruled in our favour. They contested and lost. I waited upon him, but he did not act. When I finally wrote to him to open Parliament for us to do government business, look at his response—he’s not ready,” he lamented.
