The flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asked former President John Dramani Mahama to allow him to be president because he has been president before.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the presidency of former President Mahama would be for just four years, unlike him, who can have eight years in office (two terms).
The NPP leader made the assertion during a visit to Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV’s palace on Sunday, May 19.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted that Mr. Mahama has already served as President, whereas he has not yet had the opportunity. Therefore, he urged Mr. Mahama to be patient and allow him to take his turn.
Moreover, Dr Bawumia also underscored that it would be appropriate for him to assume the presidency as they both hail from the North.
“Myself and my main opponent [John Mahama] are all your children. We are both from the North and he has been president before but I haven’t been president before, so I have told him [John Mahama] that he is my senior brother, and he should have patience for me so I can also become president of this country.
“I will be able to be president for eight years, and he can only be president for four years, so if the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for eight years rather than four years,” Dr Bawumia
Also, Dr Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to a policy-driven campaign telling the electorate about his proposed plans and programmes for the country if elected President, devoid of divisive rhetoric aimed at undermining the reputation of his opponents.
