Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, Most Rev. Anthony Narh Asare expressed his concerns about many members of the Catholic Church adopting practices from other denominations that originated in the Catholic Church.
He criticized some pastors for imitating these practices and traditions while also calling out members of the Catholic Church for participating in these borrowed traditions.
He mentioned the example of the Christian midnight prayer program “Alpha Hour,” which he believes is a variation of the Catholic Church’s “Holy Hour.” He sees this as a longstanding practice of the Catholic Church that has been adopted and presented as something new.
Most Rev. Asare made the pronouncements in his speech to Catholic graduates of Junior High Schools (JHSs) and Senior High Schools (SHS) at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Legon last week.
“They are copying us. We have Holy hour, now they have created Alpha hour and Catholics are behaving as if they have not heard it before. We tell you, 6 am, 12 noon and 6pm are hours to pray the Angelus. Now, they are introducing it as if it is something new. They are copying us so don’t allow the copy to replace the original,” Bishop Asare admonished.
Most Rev. Asare also took offense at numerous radio preachers who imitated customs and practices in their lectures, claiming to be the original creators.
He therefore exhorted the Catholic faithful to make sure that they follow these church-instituted behaviors in order to prevent imitations of their original customs and practices from taking precedence over the original.
