An American woman, Skylah Leeann Marine Travis, and her Liberian fiancé, Daniel Ireland, have been sentenced to 10 years of hard labor by an Accra Circuit Court for attacking and robbing a Bolt driver in Ghana.
During the trial, a tearful Travis apologized to the victim, saying, “I did not mean to do that; I want to ask for forgiveness.” Her sentencing was initially deferred until January 10, 2025, pending a pregnancy test, which later came back negative.
The court also ordered both Travis and Ireland to pay GH¢6,000.00 each as compensation to the victim by January 31, 2025.
Ireland, a graphic designer, was sentenced earlier on January 15, 2025, after pleading guilty to conspiracy, robbery, and causing harm.
The incident occurred on January 7, 2025, around 12:30 a.m., when the couple hired a Bolt driver to transport them from Labadi to Teshie Malik in Accra. Upon arrival, they claimed they needed to collect belongings for a trip to Madina. Suddenly, Ireland attacked the driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck, arms, and head.
The couple fled the scene with the driver’s Toyota Corolla S, valued at GH¢160,000.00, two mobile phones (an iPhone 13 Pro Max worth GH¢8,000.00 and a Samsung S10 worth GH¢2,950.00), and GH¢1,000.00 in cash.
The injured driver, who fell unconscious, was rescued by a passerby and rushed to a clinic before being transferred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for treatment.
Following police investigations, Ireland and Travis were arrested at a hotel in Kasoa, where the stolen vehicle was recovered.
During sentencing, presiding judge Mrs. Susanna Eduful took into account the couple’s age, status as first offenders, and their claim of being under the influence of drugs during the crime. She urged them to seek rehabilitation after serving their sentences and encouraged them to reform and contribute positively to society.
