ANGER AS PATIENT DIES AFTER LEAVING AWUTU BEREKU HEALTH CENTRE TO BUY WATER
Residents blame health workers for delayed response to emergency near facility

Tension is mounting in Awutu Bereku, a town in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, after a patient on admission at the Awutu Bereku Health Centre tragically died while attempting to buy sachet water.
According to eyewitnesses, the man, believed to be in his late 50s, left his hospital bed on Tuesday to purchase drinking water from a nearby vendor, as none was reportedly available at the health centre. After buying the water, he collapsed just a few metres from the facility—close to the Awutu Bereku Police Station—and attempted to return but could not make it.
Residents who witnessed the incident say they rushed to alert health workers for immediate help, but claim the nurse on duty failed to respond promptly. The man lay helpless just about 15 metres from the clinic, prompting outrage among community members who believe his life could have been saved if the health workers had acted swiftly.
“He was not feeling well, and yet he had to go out himself to buy water. When he collapsed, we ran to the clinic, but no one came out quickly. By the time help came, it was too late,” a witness told Adom News.
Police later arrived to transport the body to the mortuary while efforts are underway to identify the deceased and notify his family.
The incident has sparked anger and calls for accountability, with residents blaming both the health facility and police for negligence.
“This is unacceptable. How can someone die so close to a clinic and no one intervenes in time?” a frustrated resident lamented.
The community is demanding answers from the management of the Awutu Bereku Health Centre, with many questioning the preparedness of the facility to handle emergencies and care for admitted patients.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but police say investigations are ongoing.
