APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF CHIEF JUSTICE NOMINEE BAFFOE-BONNIE
In a majority decision, the committee found the Supreme Court Justice demonstrated "outstanding competence" and a deep knowledge of the law, paving the way for his final approval by Parliament.

The Appointments Committee of Parliament has officially recommended the approval of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of Ghana. The decision, reached by a majority vote, follows a vetting process that began with controversy but concluded with strong endorsements of the nominee’s legal acumen.
Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the committee, reported to Parliament on Thursday that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie “demonstrated outstanding competence, deep knowledge of the law and a firm grasp of the judicial ethics.” He added that the nominee addressed questions “with professionalism, clarity and intellectual rigour” and possesses all the requisite qualifications for the high office.
The vetting on Monday was not without its drama. The session was temporarily suspended after a heated exchange between Majority and Minority leaders. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin opened proceedings by referring to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed nominee,” a label the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, immediately objected to as inappropriate.
Despite the political friction, the nominee himself struck a conciliatory and reform-oriented tone. Acknowledging the judiciary stands at a “defining moment,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged to lead an era of transformation focused on three core pillars:
- Procedural Clarity & Predictability: Establishing clear, publishable rules and timelines for case management.
- Efficiency & Accountability: Leveraging technology and performance metrics to ensure justice is delivered transparently.
- Open Justice: Implementing measures like appropriate streaming and public summaries to make the court’s work more visible to citizens.
His vision was to ensure the law “remains both a shield for the weak and a restraint upon the powerful.”
The nominee received public support from Court of Appeal Judge Yaw Oppong, who was present and expressed confidence in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s preparedness, describing him as a “veteran” of the process.
With the committee’s positive report, the nomination now moves to the full Parliament for a final vote to confirm Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice.
