AS A WOMAN, YOU HAVE TO KEEP PROVING YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN REALLY BE A LEADER — Wendy Shay

Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay has discussed how women are frequently underappreciated in leadership roles, emphasising that society still finds it difficult to view women as capable decision-makers.

In an interview on GHOne TV, the “Survival” singer, who goes by Wendy Asiamah Addo in private, voiced worry that stereotypes about women’s skills are still shaped by traditional gender norms.

“I think in this part of the world, women have always been seen to play a particular role. Women are not really considered to be leaders. Your place is in the kitchen while the man has to go out and work,” she said.

She claims that as more women question assumptions and assume leadership roles in male-dominated fields, this way of thinking is gradually changing.

“Gradually, the narrative is changing. I feel like as a woman, you have to keep on proving yourself that you can really be a leader and you’re emotionally and mentally there to be able to take responsibility and also be accountable,” she stated.

Wendy Shay noted that changing societal norms can be emotionally and mentally taxing, frequently requiring women to endure under duress.

“I feel like changing of narrative is what’s so demanding and stressful because you really pull through and face the storm no matter what.

“Our bodies are designed so differently than men. Naturally, we are quite weak. It’s easy for a woman to break down emotionally than a man when it comes to some things,” she added.

She added that women who want to be leaders need to have mental toughness and resilience.

“You have to build yourself up and know that you’re really up for it mentally,” Wendy Shay posited.
