ASAMOAH GYAN TIPS NIGERIA AND TWO OTHERS TO WIN AFCON 2025
The former Black Stars captain has named the Super Eagles, defending champions Ivory Coast, and hosts Morocco as his top contenders for the continental title, expressing disappointment over Ghana's absence.
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has identified Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco as the leading favourites to win the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on the red carpet at the 2025 CAF Awards, Gyan acknowledged the disappointment of Ghana’s failure to qualify but highlighted the strength of other African giants. Despite Nigeria’s recent setback of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gyan believes their formidable squad makes them a top contender.
“Nigeria did well; they were close last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams… Morocco is also a strong contender who are also doing well,” Gyan stated. “I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco are favourites.”
The 35th edition of the tournament is scheduled to be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Gyan’s comments come as the continent’s football community gathers for major events, with Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi winning the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award on the same evening.
