ATTORNEY-GENERAL REQUESTS POLICE PROBE ON OWNERSHIP OF STOLEN $200,000 AND €300,000 FROM CECILIA DAPAAH

The Attorney-General has instructed the Police to investigate the ownership of the US$200,000 and €300,000 that were stolen from the residence of the Former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The A-G’s request for an investigation comes as Madam Dapaah did not specify the owner of the stolen cash in her initial complaint.

According to the A-G’s advice on the matter, Madam Dapaah initially mentioned that $800,000 belonged to her deceased brother, and GHC300,000 was a contribution towards her mother’s funeral, both of which were contained in a box and a bag respectively, and were stolen. This information was confirmed by Henry Osei Kwabena, who informed the police that he had brought the box of money to his sister for safekeeping.

However, the A-G deems it essential for the police to conduct independent investigations to ascertain the following:

i. The true ownership of the amount of US$800,000. ii. The source(s) from which the established owner of the amount of US$800,000 acquired the money. iii. Whether the accused actually stole the full amount of US$800,000 from the complainant’s house.

Additionally, the A-G points out that Cecilia Dapaah did not indicate who the amounts of $200,000 and €300,000, which were stolen from the room, belonged to. The charge sheet has combined the $200,000 and $800,000 in one count, attributing them to Cecilia Dapaah.

Moreover, the total sum retrieved from the accused, along with the value of acquired properties, does not match the amount reported as stolen by the complainants.

In light of this, the A-G urges the police to conduct further investigations to determine:

i. The ownership of the US$200,000 and €300,000. ii. The source(s) from which the established owner(s) of the amounts of US$200,000 and €300,000 acquired the money. iii. Broaden the investigations to cover money laundering and other financial crimes, including examining the complainants.
