OVER 90,000 APPLY WITHIN 48 HOURS FOR GHANA’S 1 MILLION CODERS PROGRAM – Sam George

Ghana’s Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation is advancing its digital transformation agenda under President John Dramani Mahama, with record-breaking public interest in its latest initiative—the 1 Million Coders Program.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, sector Minister Hon. Sam George highlighted the launch of the program in April 2025 as a game-changer in developing digital skills among Ghana’s youth. “The program received over 90,000 applications in just 48 hours,” Sam George revealed, adding that the pilot phase has already trained 859 individuals more than half of whom are women.

Key features of the initiative:

  • Nationwide Reach: The program is designed for maximum inclusion, with support from local assemblies, schools, and Members of Parliament.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Tech giants Huawei and Google are key partners, each pledging to train 100,000 Ghanaians. Google’s AI research lab in Accra will also support trainees in transitioning to job opportunities.
  • Practical Focus: The curriculum emphasizes hands-on, job-ready digital skills aimed at strengthening Ghana’s position in the evolving global digital economy.

Sam George also updated on internet data reforms, noting that data costs have significantly dropped as of July 1, 2025. MTN’s popular GH₵399 bundle now offers 214GB (up from 92GB), with similar increases from Telecel and AirtelTigo. These improvements follow a national spectrum review and revised licensing conditions under Mahama’s administration.

“This is a deliberate move to prepare our people for the future of work,” the Minister said. “We are delivering on our promises—cheaper data, better training, and inclusive access to tech for all.”
