BABA SADIQ ABDULAI WINS OKAIKWEI CENTRAL PARLIAMENTARY SEAT

Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nominee for Parliament in Okaikwei Central, has successfully won the 2024 general elections, defeating the sitting Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The fiercely competitive election indicated early outcomes pointing to a victory for Patrick Boamah. Nonetheless, demonstrations by the NDC prompted the Electoral Commission (EC) to reassess the numbers. After the review, Baba Sadiq was formally announced as the elected Member of Parliament.

As stated by the EC’s returning officer, from the total of 30,322 votes cast, NDC’s Baba Sadiq obtained 15,383 votes, just edging out NPP’s Mr. Boamah, who received 14,949 votes.

The announcement followed the NDC’s insistence that the results from two-thirds of the constituency’s polling places must be utilized to declare the outcome.

The NDC maintained that utilizing results from 78% of the 141 polling stations was a legitimate method, while the NPP contested this. The circumstances prompted certain NDC supporters to create disorder at the collation center.

The electoral process encountered notable setbacks, especially on December 7 at the polling station of Ansurudeen Islamic School. Conflicts arising from restricted space and the number of polling agents resulted in turmoil, causing the destruction of voting booths amid the tensions that followed.

In spite of these obstacles, the collation was ultimately finished, and Baba Sadiq’s win was validated, just under 48 hours following the elections.

In his victory speech, he said, “I’ve always maintained that I don’t think Patrick Boamah hasn’t done his best for the constituency but I think that this is the point where the constituency is looking for a younger, dynamic, innovative, bold and visionary man to come and continue and elevate the development conversation in the constituency.

Our message is transformation, our message is to create sustainable livelihoods for the constituents and particularly young people,” he concluded.
