The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central, Baba Sadiq, has pledged to challenge the results of a re-collation that declared his opponent, Patrick Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as the Member of Parliament-elect.
In a social media post, Baba Sadiq expressed his unwavering determination to ensure what he believes to be the true mandate of the people is upheld. “Whatever it will take, whatever extent possible, the true mandate of the people of Okaikwei Central will stand. Just a matter of time,” he stated.
Baba Sadiq was initially declared the winner of the parliamentary election in the constituency. However, a re-collation conducted on December 21, 2024, at the Electoral Commission’s old office reversed the results, declaring Patrick Boamah the victor with 21,099 votes against Sadiq’s 19,368.
The re-collation has sparked outrage among NDC supporters, who allege irregularities in the process. Baba Sadiq and his team have vowed to pursue all legal and procedural avenues to contest the re-collation outcome and restore what they believe to be the rightful verdict of the electorate.
The re-collation in Okaikwei Central forms part of a broader series of electoral disputes in nine constituencies following the December 2024 elections. The Electoral Commission has defended the practice as a standard procedure to address disputes or disruptions during the electoral process.
As tensions rise, political observers will closely monitor how the challenge unfolds, with Baba Sadiq’s case poised to become a significant test of the integrity and transparency of Ghana’s electoral system.
