Majority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament (MP), Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has alleged that Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin colluded with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority Caucus to cause chaos in the House.
Afenyo-Markin stated that the Speaker purposefully dodged being given a legal notice concerning a petition to vacate four parliamentary seats. He stated that he made this decision intentionally to benefit the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We have just witnessed a conspiracy between the Speaker and the Minority to bring confusion in the house,” Afenyo-Markin told journalists at Parliament on Thursday, October 17, 2024. He further expressed frustration, asserting that the Speaker had no authority to interpret the constitution on matters concerning the vacant seats, adding, “It is clear that Mr. Speaker avoided service of the writ to do the bidding of the NDC.”
The dispute focuses on a persistent legal battle over four parliamentary seats that the Majority insists were emptied.
The Effutu MP and his colleagues in the Majority Caucus believe that Speaker Bagbin’s behaviour is diminishing the judiciary’s involvement in the ongoing issue being handled by the Supreme Court.
In reaction, Afenyo-Markin announced that the Majority Caucus will abstain from participating in parliamentary activities until a decision is made by the Supreme Court on the matter.
This latest occurrence contributes to an increasing number of conflicts between the Majority and Minority in the Ghanaian Parliament.
