BANK OF GHANA TO CELEBRATE CEDI AT 60 WITH NATIONWIDE COMMEMORATION
Central bank launches six-month program to honour the Cedi’s legacy and reaffirm its commitment to economic stability.
Ghana’s national currency, the Cedi, will mark a significant milestone—its 60th anniversary as the country’s sole legal tender on July 19, 2025. First introduced in 1965 to replace the Ghanaian Pound, the Cedi has stood for six decades as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s economic independence, resilience, and reform.
In celebration of this landmark anniversary, the Bank of Ghana has announced a six-month nationwide commemoration from July through December 2025. Activities will include launch ceremonies, educational campaigns, public exhibitions, and stakeholder forums to deepen public appreciation for the Cedi’s historic journey and its role in Ghana’s economic development.
According to a press release signed by the Bank Secretary, Sandra Thompson (Ms.), on May 13, 2025, the anniversary provides a moment of national reflection.
“The anniversary offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the history of the Cedi, to celebrate the progress made, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency,” the statement read.
“In addition to being a medium of exchange, the Cedi is a symbol of our pride, heritage, and shared aspirations for a prosperous future.”
The Cedi has undergone multiple reforms over the past 60 years, both in design and policy direction, to adapt to the changing economic landscape. From early banknotes to today’s more secure currency system, the evolution of the Cedi mirrors Ghana’s journey through growth, inflation, reform, and resilience.
The Bank of Ghana also reaffirmed its mandate to ensure price stability and currency integrity.
“The Bank of Ghana is committed to maintaining a stable Cedi in pursuit of stability in the general level of prices,” the release noted.
