BARKER-VORMAWOR VOWS TO DEFEND ABU TRICA IF OFORI-ATTA EXTRADITION DOESN’T FOLLOW

Activist-lawyer questions disparity after Ghanaian social media entrepreneur is arrested for alleged U.S. romance scams.

Ghanaian lawyer and anti-corruption campaigner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has stated he is prepared to defend social media entrepreneur Frederick “Abu Trica” Kumi against extradition to the United States. His declaration comes with a pointed condition: that similar extradition efforts be applied to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Barker-Vormawor voiced his position in a social media post on December 11, 2025, questioning why authorities moved to arrest Abu Trica but have not extradited Ofori-Atta, who also faces allegations of wrongdoing abroad.

“This one paa dier I am ready to defend Abu Trica to fight the extradition. If they won’t bring Ken Ofori-Atta; then Good lawyers must intervene for Abu. Draw – Draw!” he wrote.

The statement follows the unsealing of an indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio. Abu Trica is accused of being part of a criminal network that allegedly defrauded elderly U.S. victims of over $8 million through online romance scams dating back to 2023.

Court documents allege that the scheme used artificial intelligence to create false identities and cultivate relationships with victims on social media and dating platforms. The suspects then reportedly solicited money under false pretenses, such as urgent medical expenses and travel costs.

The funds were allegedly transferred to Ohio before being distributed to co-conspirators in Ghana and other locations. Abu Trica faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, along with a forfeiture specification. A conviction could carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Abu Trica was arrested by Ghanaian authorities on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The U.S. has initiated proceedings for his extradition
