Experienced broadcaster Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, commonly referred to as Abeiku Santana, has expressed significant worries regarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s digitalization initiative.
During a rally hosted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Santana criticized the NPP for utilizing a number of app launches as a political trick to influence votes for their candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the forthcoming presidential election.
He emphasized that although the NPP asserts it is promoting digitalization, many of these applications do not deliver real advantages to everyday Ghanaians.
“Nigeria is Africa’s biggest music destination, yet they don’t have a music streaming app. Have you ever heard of a Ghanaian-made app enabling Nigerians to stream music? It’s a facade,” he remarked.
Citing specific instances, he highlighted that the Ghana Post app, which is heavily advertised by the NPP, is infrequently utilized in reality.
“Ask any Uber or Yango driver if they use that app,” Santana remarked. “It’s the same thing they did with the COVID app. They’ll announce an app, claiming it’s digitalization, but it’s really a tactic to deceive people. It doesn’t work; it doesn’t do anything. Ask yourself—what benefit does it bring to you?”
In contrast, Santana commended the NDC’s outlook for the creative arts and tourism industries, stressing that the NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, possesses a more thorough and actionable strategy.
“We have an end-to-end policy, complete with programs and ideas that will transform the creative arts and tourism sectors,” he noted.
