Benjamin Azamati Qualifies for 2025 World Athletics Championships
Ghana’s sprinting sensation, Benjamin Azamati, has officially secured his place at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, after recording an impressive 9.98 seconds in the men’s 100m at the McNabb Sprint Series.
The 26-year-old’s performance, achieved with a legal wind reading of +1.2 m/s, marks his season’s best and places him joint 17th on the global qualification list. This feat also cements Azamati’s status as Ghana’s premier sprinter, being the only Ghanaian to clock four wind-legal sub-10 second runs in history.
To date, Ghana boasts nine legal sub-10 second finishes in the men’s 100m:
- Benjamin Azamati – 4 times
- Leo Myles-Mills – 2 times
- Aziz Zakari – 2 times
- Joseph Paul Amoah – 1 time
Azamati, who holds the national 100m record, reached the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He opted out of the recent World Relays in Guangzhou to focus on individual qualification—a strategy that has clearly paid off.
In addition to his individual success, Azamati remains a critical component of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team, having contributed to the national record of 38.07 seconds set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Ghana’s 4x100m Relay Team Also Qualifies
Meanwhile, Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team—comprising Barnabas Aggerh, Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Alufar Bokpin, and Ibrahim Fuseini—also clinched a spot at the Tokyo 2025 Championships.
The team placed second in Round 2 of the World Relays qualifiers in Guangzhou, posting a solid time of 38.32 seconds, narrowly behind France’s 38.31. The performance earned Ghana one of the final qualification slots for next year’s global event.
With both Azamati and the relay team now qualified, Ghanaian athletics fans will be hoping for podium finishes when the world gathers in Tokyo.
