BIG PUSH FOR BARRACKS AS PRESIDENT MAHAMA UNVEILS FOREIGN-BUILT HOUSING PLAN FOR POLICE AND MILITARY

President John Mahama has announced that his government has commissioned a Singaporean company to construct housing units for Ghana’s security services.
This includes the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
He disclosed that he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the company to build a prefabricated home plant in Ghana during his trip to Singapore in 2025, sealing the deal.
Per myjoyonline reports, the President claims that building a 10,000-student dorm at the University of Ghana was the company’s first significant project.
“But we have also commissioned them to build housing for our Police Service, our Prisons, Fire Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces,” President Mahama said.
At the Ghana Police Service end-of-year event, or WASSA, which took place at the Police Headquarters in Accra, he made the announcement.
According to President Mahama, the project would greatly enhance housing conditions for security personnel and is part of the government’s Big Push Agenda.
“And so start identifying your lands in your various barracks, where we will build this accommodation so that we can provide enough accommodation for our police service,” he urged.
He said that WASSA was more than just a social custom and that it was an opportunity to think about sacrifice, service, and our shared duty to keep Ghana peaceful and stable.
He added that the occasion gave officers a chance to take a break from the hard work of law enforcement, rekindle friendships, and reaffirm their commitment to the Ghana Police Service’s core principles.
Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police, and the Service’s leadership were praised by the President for what he called a “strong security performance during the Christmas season.”
“We had a lot of visitors coming into Ghana and there was a lot of activity over the Christmas period. You made sure that crime was kept at a very, very, very, very low level and we thank you very much for your diligence,” he said.
He pointed out that because of increased travel, social activities, and security dangers, holiday seasons frequently put law enforcement under extraordinary strain.
According to President Mahama, the Police made sure that Ghanaians had a peaceful Christmas and New Year’s celebration via careful preparation, discipline, and intelligence-led operations.
He commended the officers’ planned placement among roads, neighbourhoods, marketplaces, places of worship, transportation hubs, and entertainment venues, stating that the visible presence soothed the public and demonstrated a responsive police force.
The President expressed his encouragement at the promptness and professionalism with which situations were handled, pointing out that reports were promptly addressed, suspects were quickly detained, and criminal activity was stopped before it got out of control.
“Let us sustain this momentum and send a clear message that there will be no hiding place for criminal elements,” he said.
