GHANA REGISTERED NURSES AND MIDWIVES ASSOCIATION CALL OFF STRIKE ACTION

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially suspended its nationwide strike, with members instructed to resume work starting Saturday, June 14, 2025. This development was confirmed by GHOne TV.

The industrial action, which began on June 4, 2025, was sparked by the government’s failure to implement crucial provisions of the 2024 Collective Agreement. This agreement—signed over a year ago by the GRNMA, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission—addressed outstanding issues such as unpaid allowances, delayed postings, and improved working conditions for nurses and midwives.

The strike caused significant disruption across public health facilities nationwide, prompting the government to call on retired nurses and midwives to volunteer temporarily to help mitigate the adverse effects on healthcare delivery. Speaking at a press briefing on June 10, 2025, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh urged retired professionals to step forward to support the health system during this critical period.

The resolution follows an urgent meeting between the GRNMA, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Health Committee of Parliament, which helped to pave the way for the strike’s suspension.

The GRNMA has consistently expressed frustration over the government’s delay in implementing the Collective Agreement, warning that continued inaction could lead to worsening healthcare delivery and increased migration of health workers seeking better conditions abroad.

With this suspension, the government and the association have renewed commitments to expedite the agreement’s implementation to restore confidence and stability in the healthcare sector.
