BRIDGET OTOO AND GTV CLASH ON SOCIAL MEDIA OVER MEDIA MANAGEMENT

Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has sparked a debate over media governance, financial accountability, and editorial independence. The online clash, which unfolded on X (formerly Twitter), began with Otoo’s sarcastic request to be appointed as Director-General of GTV for a week and escalated into a broader discussion about the state of Ghana’s media landscape.

Otoo ignited the conversation with a tweet directed at President John Dramani Mahama, humorously asking, “Dear @JDMahama, Could you please appoint me as DG of @GTV_Ghana for one week? I want to do something small for there.”

GTV’s social media administrator quickly responded, correcting Otoo on the official appointment process. “Dear @Bridget_Otoo, the job application you’ve written should rather be sent to the National Media Commission and not @JDMahama. As a journalist, I’m sure you know the NMC is the appointing body of the GBC D-G. #posco,” the admin wrote.

The exchange grew more intense when GTV’s admin referenced Metro TV, Otoo’s employer, reminding her that GBC had invested in the station decades ago without seeing a return. “It is the foresight of GBC that brought about Metro TV, where you are currently employed. Since GBC invested in Metro TV more than three decades ago, GBC is yet to get a return on investment. Focus your attention on how to get your organization to post a profit,” the admin added.

Otoo fired back, criticizing GBC’s leadership and suggesting political influence over its board. “Which board? The one with Ayeboafo, Boamah, etc? Are they still functioning? Just as you believe I am responsible for the financial fortunes of Metro, the real appointing authority will instruct them to do so… Mtseeewwww,” she retorted.

She further argued that GTV’s social media activity reflects top-level management approval and questioned the station’s reliance on government funding despite years of state support. “We can all agree that GTV is free and not being gagged based on what their X account tweets and some of their ‘defenders’ will have you believe. If you know the structure of GTV, then you know nothing is put out without management approval. To state the obvious, this was sanctioned by management, the apex of it is the Director General,” Otoo stated.

She also called for GTV to improve its on-screen content, adding, “Hopefully, they transfer this energy to the screen for us to watch without being forced/blackmailed to.”
