BRITISH NATIONAL NABBED IN HIGH-STAKES DRUG SMUGGLING ATTEMPT AT KIA
Security personnel at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) thwarted a significant drug smuggling attempt on Sunday, May 19, 2025, resulting in the apprehension of a British national and two Ghanaians in what officials label a synchronised effort to transport narcotics into the nation.
The British citizen, who arrived from Thailand on Emirates flight EK 787 with a layover in Dubai, was apprehended by agents of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) during a standard check.
Two suitcases belonging to the suspect were discovered to hold 92 slabs of a material believed to be cannabis.
Initial examinations of the confiscated substances verified they were cannabis, totalling 53.60 kilograms.
However, the bust continued beyond that point. Prompt investigations at the airport resulted in the apprehension of two Ghanaians — a customs officer and a porter assigned to the airport’s Commercially Important Person (CIP) section — who are suspected of helping to smuggle the drugs through security screenings.
The three individuals are presently detained while NACOC intensifies its investigation into what authorities believe may be a connection to a broader global drug trafficking network.
Officials state that charges will be initiated once inquiries are finalised.
