BURKINA FASO CELEBRATES AS IBRAHIM TRAORÉ UNVEILS FIRST MADE-IN-AFRICA ELECTRIC BUSES
Burkina Faso has entered a new era of innovation and industrial self-reliance with the official unveiling of its first-ever locally manufactured electric buses by President Ibrahim Traoré. The historic event, captured in a viral video circulating on social media, shows jubilant citizens dancing in the streets, reflecting the pride and excitement surrounding this major technological milestone.
The electric buses, branded ITAOUA, symbolize more than just an advancement in transportation—they mark a significant step towards Africa’s green energy future and homegrown industrial capacity. The buses are engineered to travel an impressive 330 kilometres on a single charge, which can be replenished in just 30 minutes. Notably, the ITAOUA is 100% electric, solar-powered, and eco-friendly, positioning Burkina Faso as a key player in Africa’s expanding clean transport sector.
Manufactured in Ouaga 2000, the capital’s burgeoning tech and business district, the ITAOUA project highlights the expertise of Burkinabé engineers and the country’s growing capability to undertake large-scale technological innovations.
This groundbreaking achievement has garnered international attention, with reports suggesting even global tech leader Elon Musk was “shocked” by the audacity and success of Burkina Faso’s electric vehicle initiative.
Burkina Faso’s strides align with a broader continental trend: Africa’s electric vehicle market, valued at $15.8 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $25.4 billion by 2029. Countries such as Botswana and Ghana are also advancing in EV technology, signaling a decisive move away from dependency on foreign innovations toward indigenous solutions.
As the continent accelerates its green transition, Burkina Faso’s ITAOUA electric buses stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration for African industrialisation and sustainability.
