CALM DOWN, THERE’S NO IMPENDING DUMSOR – Energy Minister, John Jinapor Assures Ghanaians
The Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Jinapor, has alleviated rising worries about claims that Ghana has merely 2.6 days’ supply of fuel reserves for electricity generation.
During an appearance on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, May 15, Jinapor acknowledged that the figure was correct but emphasised that steps have been taken to prevent any potential crisis.
“On fuel stock, we did indicate to them that we have 2.6 days of fuel,” the Minister confirmed. “But I also did say that fortunately, the Ministry of Finance has supported us—we’ve procured 450,000 barrels of light crude oil arriving this weekend.
“So, it is true that we have 2.6 days of stock, the good news is that we have 450,000 barrels coming in, so we shouldn’t panic. We will be okay.”
His comments come after a surge of public concern triggered by speculation of an impending power crisis, particularly as some regions have faced sporadic blackouts in recent weeks.
Jinapor, however, stressed that there is no reason for concern, asserting that the arrival of extra fuel reserves would stabilise supply and enable the power sector to function efficiently.
“No—[there is no looming power crisis],” he said reassuringly.
