The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has reportedly picked up Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, host of the morning show on Onua TV/FM, a Media General subsidiary over recent ‘volatile’ comments while on hosting duties.
The outspoken media guru was arrested on October 19, 2022, on Wednesday. The cause of his arrest is unknown.
However, it should be noted that the broadcaster recently made comments against President Nana Akufo-alleged Addo’s involvement in galamsey, which made headlines.
In a subsequent statement, the Ministry of Information denied the allegations and stated that the government has filed a complaint with the National Media Commission (NMC) and may consider legal action as a possible remedy.
The government stated last week that Captain Smart would be sued over allegations that President Akufo-Addo is engaged in illicit mining.
The National Media Commission will be consulted over the claims made by Mr Smart, also known as Captain Smart, in a video that was made public, the government declared in a statement.
“It is, however, imperative to note that the aforementioned action is without prejudice to the government’s right to seek legal action against Mr Smart, Onua TV and Media General,” the statement noted.
The government accused Mr Smart of “unethical and irresponsible” journalism, adding that “the video is intended to court disaffection for government and undermine efforts to fight illegal mining in the country.”
