GHANA JOURNALIST ASSOCIATION DECLARES MEDIA BLACKOUT ON HAWA KOOMSON OVER ASSAULT ON JOURNALIST

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has asked all  Ghanaian media houses and journalists to enforce a media blackout on Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Member of the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.

This directive comes in the aftermath of the police’s failure to apprehend individuals who physically attacked David Kobina, a journalist who works with Cape FM in the Central Region, during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant vetting in Cape Coast.

According to reports, the thugs mistook him for another person they alleged had insulted the MP, also the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

However, addressing the media, Mr Dwumfour expressed concern over the lack of response from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the police in addressing the assault, leading to the decision for a complete media blackout on the lawmaker.

“We submitted written petitions to the NPP with some demands, and the deadline has long passed, but we regret to announce that nothing has been done, and we are forced to advise ourselves in the light of the cold silence.

“Considering the ongoing incidents of attacks against journalists and media practitioners and based on gathered intelligence, in consultation with partner institutions, the GJA is urging all media houses to observe a total media blackout on Mavis Hawa Koomson and to distance themselves from her as a minister of state. This decision is rooted in the belief that there are individuals around the MP who may pose a threat to the lives of journalists and other media practitioners,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour further urged NPP officials and supporters nationwide to ensure the safety of journalists covering the NPP parliamentary primaries on Saturday, January 27.

“It is our prayer that reporters will be allowed to do their work freely without intimidation or attacks. We won’t accept or tolerate any negativity,” the GJA president said
