The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has broken his silence following the party’s historic loss in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
Speaking at a press conference on December 9, 2024, Chairman Wontumi acknowledged the gravity of the defeat and hinted at plans to conduct a comprehensive investigation into what went wrong. He revealed that the NPP’s Ashanti Region branch will soon engage party leaders and key stakeholders, including regional executives, MPs, parliamentary candidates, constituency executives, and municipal leaders, to analyze the factors behind the party’s performance.
“It didn’t go well for us,” Chairman Wontumi admitted. “The NPP branch in the Ashanti Region will very soon call on all the leaders to investigate what went wrong and bring it to the attention of the public. What is important now is to bounce back for Ghana and Asanteman to be better again.”
Chairman Wontumi expressed optimism despite the defeat, quoting a reflective sentiment: “If it is a time to cry and you don’t cry, people will talk about it. And if it is time to laugh and you don’t laugh, people will talk about it. So, God knows why He created crying and laughing.”
The New Patriotic Party faced a major setback as the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, while the NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, garnered 4,657,304 votes.
The NDC also achieved a historic parliamentary victory, with National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi announcing the party’s win of 185 parliamentary seats, securing a majority in the legislative house.
The NPP’s loss has triggered calls for introspection and reform within the party, as stakeholders work to rebuild ahead of future elections.
