Organizers of the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Charterhouse on Saturday, March 19, 2022, published the final list of nominees for this year’s Ghana Music Awards.
The list of nominees published had one of the categories that has existed since the beginning of the award show in 1999 rested and many music enthusiasts started asking questions.
The Group of the Year category was missing in this year’s categories which meant no group in the music industry will pick home that award when the stage is set for the awards to be given out.
According to Robert Klah, the Public Relations Officer of Charter House, there is no Group of the Year category in 2022’s VGMA because music groups in the country are not competitive enough.
Robert Klah made this known in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Tuesday, March 22, 2022.
Group of the Year for this particular year, we’ve seen it to be not competitive. We do not have enough groups this year. We are resting it.”
Reiterating the position by Charter House, the Managing Director of Media General, Mr. Francis Doku, has also pointed out that there was an “overwhelming” consensus among the members of VGMA’s board to exclude the category because “the relevance of music groups has dwindled.”
Per the definition of the category;
“The Best Group of the Year is the Artistes adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the group with the highest audience appeal and popularity. They must comprise of at least 2 or more members and must have released a hit single/album during the year under review”
With the definition given above, many entertainment pundits and music enthusiasts have expressed concerns, especially after the exploits of R2bess last year.
The group made up of Omar Sterling and Mugeez, released a-15-track album titled ‘Back 2 Basics’ and “Eboso,” a song on the album received massive airplay.
