China has officially launched the world’s first 10G broadband network, marking a major leap in global internet infrastructure and digital connectivity. The milestone event took place on Sunday, April 20, in Sunan County, Hebei Province.
The pioneering initiative, jointly led by Chinese tech giant Huawei and state-owned telecom operator China Unicom, delivers jaw-dropping download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps, upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, and ultra-low latency of just 3 milliseconds — a combination that places China at the forefront of broadband innovation worldwide.
Powered by 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, this next-generation network dramatically enhances data transmission capabilities over existing fiber-optic infrastructure. It is particularly suited for data-heavy applications such as 8K video streaming, virtual and augmented reality, cloud computing, and the integration of smart home technologies.
To put the speed into perspective, a 20GB 4K movie that would typically take about 10 minutes to download on a 1 Gbps connection can now be downloaded in less than 20 seconds using this new 10G broadband.
This advancement not only cements China’s technological leadership in broadband development—surpassing countries such as the UAE and Qatar, which boast some of the fastest commercial networks globally—but also promises to revolutionize sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and telecommunications, by offering faster and more reliable connectivity.
The Collaborators
Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Shenzhen, Huawei has been instrumental in developing cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure, especially in 5G and optical broadband technologies.
China Unicom, one of the country’s three major state-owned telecom providers, delivers broadband, mobile, and enterprise services across China and has been a long-time player in digital expansion efforts nationwide.
As 10G broadband rolls out across more regions in China, it is expected to significantly accelerate the country’s digital economy and set a new global benchmark for high-speed internet access.
