CK AKONNOR REVEALS GFA INTERFERENCE IN BLACK STARS PLAYER SELECTION

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabena (CK) Akonnor has disclosed that officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) interfered with player selection during his tenure.

Appointed in 2020 as Kwesi Appiah’s successor under GFA President Kurt Okraku, Akonnor faced challenges in asserting full control over his squad. Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, the former Ghana international revealed that GFA officials often imposed their preferences on team selection, creating tension and discomfort in his role.

“As a coach, you draw the list of players you want to use based on what you want to do. Obviously, other members of the FA would also bring their views on board, but it was sometimes uncomfortable,” Akonnor shared. He added, “I understand that football is not done by one person, but in my case, it wasn’t a situation where we were working together.”

Akonnor’s tenure saw a record of four wins, four losses, and two draws, resulting in a 40% win rate. Despite his efforts, he was dismissed following a string of poor results.

The former coach’s revelations come amidst the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years, highlighting ongoing challenges within Ghana’s football framework.
