COURT CLEARS WAY FOR DADDY LUMBA’S FAMILY TO SEEK INJUNCTION AGAINST PLANNED ‘SECOND FUNERAL’

Legal battle looms as family moves to halt separate ‘Celebration of Life’ event for Highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

An Accra High Court has granted the family of late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba permission to file an application for an injunction to stop a planned “second funeral” being organised in his honour.

The application is being led by the Lumba family’s Abusuapanin, Kofi Owusu, who is seeking to restrain Evangelist Papa Shee, Akosua Serwaa and others from proceeding with the event.

The development was confirmed by Dominic Kwadwo Osei of Baba Jamal & Associates, one of the lawyers representing the Lumba family, in an interview on February 13, 2026.

According to him, the court has granted leave for the family to file the necessary legal processes, and the substantive injunction application is expected to be filed next week.

“The court granted us leave to file the necessary processes for an application for an injunction. There is an intent to file an application for an injunction. The reasons will be fully itemised in our application… next week,” he stated.

Dispute Over ‘Second Funeral’

The legal action follows the announcement by Evangelist Papa Shee of a two-day “Celebration of Life” event scheduled for March 28 and 29, 2026, in honour of Daddy Lumba.

The planned event comes months after the official funeral, which was held on December 13, 2025, and organised by the family under the leadership of the Abusuapanin.

While organisers of the March programme have presented it as a commemorative celebration, the family appears to view it as an unauthorised second funeral, prompting the move to seek court intervention.

Court to Decide

Lawyers for the family say they are confident in their case but acknowledge that the final decision rests with the court.

“We will do everything in our power as lawyers to convince the court, but the final decision to grant or not to grant the injunction lies with the court,” Dominic Kwadwo Osei added.

The case is expected to generate significant public interest given Daddy Lumba’s towering influence in Ghana’s music industry and the emotional attachment many fans have to his legacy.

Further developments are anticipated once the injunction application is formally filed and the court sets a date to hear the matter.
