The Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division discovered a significant amount of illegal firearms and ammunition at Tema Port, finding 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds hidden in suitcases.
The 40-foot container, with the identification number MEDU4496951, was wrongly labeled as carrying vehicles and personal belongings when it was transported from the United States and was seized on November 4, 2024.
As per Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, Customs Commissioner, the inspection was carried out with the agent and the importer’s representative present.
During the inspection, hidden weapons were discovered, leading Customs officials to engage the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units, who verified the unlawful shipment. The guns, bullets, and clips were confiscated right away, and the rest of the items in the box were held for more investigation.
Both the agent and the consignee’s representative are in custody, helping with inquiries. Brigadier Ayorrogo cautioned about the severe outcomes of bringing in weapons without appropriate licenses, stressing that violators will be subject to the complete force of the law.
